Four-Year Plan for 2006 Class and Forward

Recruitment
After collecting all applications for the MedStart Program, the top 50 candidates will be selected to participate during MedStart activities as part of Scholars Day. Based on Scholars Day group interviews, 30 candidate files will be forwarded to the medical school for one-on-one interviews with the MedStart admissions team at the School of Medicine. Fifteen students will be notified of their acceptance into the MedStart program as members of the Honors Program.

First-Year Students
As a first-year student, you will register for the MedStart Seminar, an Honors directed study (one credit hour in the fall academic term and one credit hour in the winter academic term). As part of the class you will take part in the following activities:

  • Seminars at the School of Medicine (seven occurrences, usually each month). Participation documentation is required.
  • Community service through activities at the medical school. Twenty-seven documented hours of service are required (15 in the fall semester; 12 in the winter term). Participation documentation is required.
  • Shadowing a School of Medicine physician ½ day four times per year. Participation documentation is required.
  • Recruitment for the next class: participating in one or more information sessions and Scholars Day for MedStart in February. Participation documentation is required.
  • Membership in the Association of Premedical Student Association
  • Participation in Honors activities including membership in the Honors Student Association 
  • Participation in an evaluation session of the year
  • Maintain a cumulative 3.3 GPA

Second-Year Students
In your second year, you'll register for the MedStart Seminar, an Honors directed study (one credit hour in the fall academic term and one credit hour in the winter academic term). You'll engage in the following activities:

  • Seminars at the School of Medicine (seven occurrences, usually each month), Participation documentation is required.
  • Active involvement in community service. Fifty documented hours of service are required during the year. Participation documentation is required.
  • Shadowing a School of Medicine physician ½ day four times per year. Participation documentation is required.
  • Recruitment for the next class: participating in one or more information session and in Scholars Day for MedStart in February. Participation documentation is required.
  • Participating in the Association of Premedical Student Association
  • Documentation of campus leadership activities
  • Participation in Honors activities including membership in Honors Student Association
  • Participating in an evaluation session of the year
  • Maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA

Third-Year Students
In your third year, you'll register for the MedStart Seminar, an Honors directed study (one credit hour in the fall academic term and one credit hour in the winter academic term). As part of the program, you'll participate in the following activities:

  • Applying for a research stipend up to $2,000 for clinical research; you must complete the research prior to the beginning of the senior year. If funded, you must apply to present your work at the Annual Wayne State Undergraduate Research Conference. 
  • Attending seminars at the medical school (seven occurrences, usually each month). Participation documentation is required.
  • Participating in active leadership in community service. Documentation is required.
  • Shadowing a School of Medicine physician ½ day four times per year. Participation documentation is required.
  • Membership in the Association of Premedical Student Association
  • Participation in Honors activities including the Honors Student Association
  • Participation in an evaluation session of the year
  • Completion of the MCAT by end of third year

By Aug. 1 you must apply to Wayne State University’s School of Medicine and its designation of Special Programs.

Fourth-Year Students
As a fourth year student, you will not be required to attend the medical school seminars. You are encouraged to participate in community service projects.

You have the option of either enrolling in a 4000 or higher level course (other than a directed study or writing intensive class) or studying abroad in the fall semester of the senior year. In either case, your fourth-year effort will become a part of your Honors Thesis, a major paper or project to be completed by end of your senior year.

During the winter term, you will present your thesis at a MedStart Symposium for selected members of the MedStart community. You will also complete an  overall evaluation of your four years of MedStart participation.

Grade-Point Average
 You must earn a cumulative 3.3 at the end of the first year of studies at Wayne State University; thereafter, a 3.5 will be required. The Honors Program will monitor your academic progress.

  • Probation for winter term:
    Cumulative grade point average for first-year students’ fall semester at WSU are reviewed by Feb 15. You must achieve a 3.3 cumulative GPA in the first year and a 3.5 cumulative GPA in all others by May in order to remain active in MedStart and in Honors. First-year students falling below the required 3.3 GPA or those MedStart students falling below the required 3.5 GPA will receive a probationary letter for the upcoming term.
  • Use of spring/summer terms for upgrading GPAs:
    You will receive an e-mail regarding the use of classes during the spring/summer term(s) to increase their GPAs if grades from winter term fall below the required 3.3 or 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Probation for fall term:
    Cumulative grade point average for your winter semester (and spring/summer terms, as applicable) will be reviewed by Oct. 1. If you have fallen below the required cumulative GPA from winter term, you will receive a probationary letter for the upcoming term.
  • Termination from Honors:
    MedStart students who have completed one year of study at Wayne State and fall below the required 3.3 GPA will receive a termination letter following the probationary period. Other MedStart students are required to continue their 3.5 cumulative GPA each semester or face termination from the program.
  • Termination from MedStart based on GPA:
    If you are terminated from Honors for falling below the required cumulative GPA, you are no longer eligible for the MedStart program with its guaranteed seat in the School of Medicine.
  • GPA and Retention of the Presidential Scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship is based on the following factors:
    • you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 each term
    • you will register for and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of WSU coursework each fall and winter term.

GPA Required in Math and Science Courses
An overall 3.3 GPA is required in the following courses: Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Any student who receives a grade of C in any of the courses is required to meet with the MedStart Coordinator monthly in the following semester to discuss academic progress.

MCAT
The expectation is that you will take the Medical College Admission Test in the spring semester of your junior year or the summer prior to the senior year. All preparations for the MCAT study review are at your own expense.

At the time of application to Wayne State’s School of Medicine, you will be expected to have a minimum percentile on each section of the MCAT. If you have not received the required percentile (TBD) on each section of the MCAT by the time of graduation following four years of study, your seat will no longer be available at the School of Medicine. (Please note: The percentile requirement is subject to change.)

All MedStart students are expected to comply with the professional attributes of Wayne State’s School of Medicine Professional Curriculum including: professional responsibility; competence and self-improvement; respect for others and professional relationships; honesty; and social responsibility. 

Note: At the time of admittance to the MedStart program, you will follow the basic admission requirements of the School of Medicine.
